Kazakhstan declares state of emergency in cities and provinces disrupted by protests

Nassultan: Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Wednesday declared a two-week state of emergency in Almaty, the largest city in Central Asia. And the western province of Mangistau, where protests turned violent. This was released by Reuters on Thursday, January 5, 2022.

The rallies began in early January, first leaving Mangistau after LPG prices in Kazakhstan jumped sharply. Almaty was in turmoil on Tuesday night as police used tear gas and deceptive bombs to quell the unrest. Meanwhile, the Kazakh government has said it is trying to lower fuel prices.

For emergency declarations, it will be valid from January 5 to 19, and under that action will also include curfews between 11pm and 7am, travel restrictions, and Prohibition of crowds

Most Kazakhs have converted their cars to LPG, which is far cheaper than gasoline in Kazakhstan, as its price is not kept high. However, the Kazakh government has stated that the low price is unsustainable and decided to lift the ban on January 1, 2022.
