WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday decided to blacklist a total of eight Cuban government officials, barring them from re-entering the United States. This was released by Reuters on Friday afternoon, January 7, 2022.

The US State Department, which manages the blacklist, has not yet confirmed the names and roles of the eight Cuban officials, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken said such a decision This is in response to the crackdown on protesters and the unjust imprisonment of protesters by the Cuban authorities.

The largest demonstration ever since the 1959 Fiden Castro Revolution took place in Cuba in July 2021 in the wake of the severe economic crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, hundreds of protesters were arrested, some of whom were remanded in custody and others sentenced to prison terms.

Antony Blinken stressed that some 600 Cuban protesters remain in jail after the protests ended, and human rights groups recently claimed that some of them were not. They do not get enough food and medicine while they are having serious health problems.
