"Omikrong" may not cause serious illness, but should not be considered a mild disease, according to the WHO.
(Geneva) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that the new COVID-19 virus, Omicron, may not cause more serious illness than Delta virus, but it does. Should be considered a mild disease. This was released by Reuters on Friday, January 7, 2022.
Janet Diaz, WHO's clinical manager, made the remarks based on a new preliminary study showing that the new Omicron mutation virus was first identified in South Africa on November 2021. There is a lower risk of hospitalization compared to the new Delta virus. She added that compared to the same Delta, Omicron was less aggressive or more depressing among young and old alike. However, this does not mean that Omicron should be considered a mild disease.
Several preliminary studies in the United Kingdom and South Africa have also confirmed that Omicron is less malignant than the new Delta virus. However, there are no specific data on how much older people are at risk for icron icons, as most studies are currently performed on younger people.
